U.S. Savings Bonds
Represent loans to the federal government, to be repaid in full, with interest, at a specified future date known as the maturity date. Series EE and HH bonds issued today are sold at a 50% discount to face value (the amount paid at maturity).

U.S. Treasury Bill
U.S. government debt with a maturity that is less than a year is a bill.

U.S. Treasury Bond
U.S. government debt with a maturity of more than 10 years is a bond.

U.S. Treasury Note
U.S. government debt with a maturity of one to 10 years is a note.

U.S. Treasury Securities
This term encompasses all the debt instruments issued by the U.S. Treasury in order to borrow money to help run the federal government. Treasury bills mature in less than one year; Treasury notes mature between one and 10 years; Treasury bonds mature after at least 10 years.

Underwriter
Insurance company receiving premiums and accepting responsibility for fulfilling the policy contract. Also, they decide whether the company should assume a particular risk.

Unsecured Debt
A debt to which no collateral has been attached. If a borrower defaults on an unsecured debt, the creditor is not able to seize the debtor's property in order to satisfy the debt. Instead, the creditor must seek a judgment against the debtor in court.
