Fishing report for Jan. 15
MATTHEWS' PICKS OF THE WEEK

01/07/2009

Looking for big game to hunt?
The Humboldt squid, a mollusk more associated with the tropics, has made its semiannual appearance along our coast. And with most of the other saltwater fishing slow or closed, this is the big chance for some real excitement, and some good eating.

For calamari lovers, it's time to overdose on squid. Unlike those fingerlings that come fried up in a basket, these monsters are running about 30 pounds each. The meat is thick and a delicacy, sold as "jumbo squid."

PICKS OF THE WEEK

1. Trout and sturgeon are both showing in pretty good numbers at Hesperia Lake in the High Desert, with the rainbows up into the 14-pound class -- as good as anywhere in the region -- and the sturgeon up to 60-plus pounds have been caught in the past week. Trout are planted twice a week. For an update on the bite, check with the tackle shop at 800-521-6332 or 760-244-5951.

Skiing: Early snow not epic but too good to miss
Sometimes one is constrained to inquire of himself, why not?

Why not golf? Why not bowling? Why not horseshoes?

Why not anything but a pastime that requires nine hours to drive 200 miles on snow-covered roads, frequently at the speed of a brisk walk?
