Stand not upon the order of your going, but go at once. Shakespeare, Macbeth, 3-4 The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee created this British Army recruitment poster in 1915 using one of the countless sayings derived from Shakespeare's work. By the second year of the First World War, the British were eager to recruit men for the Army. What was to have been a very short war had turned into a desperate struggle. England did not start their participation in the war with a large number of veterans and in the first year the casualties were beyond any expectation. They lacked a steady supply of trained reserves who were ready to fight and as a consequence developed many patriotic posters in an effort to continuously recruit new soldiers.
