St. Moritz's mineral springs, for which it was originally known, were found over 3,000 years ago. From Roman times visitors have come to the area for the curing effects of the spring waters. In the mid 1800's the first skiers arrived and by the 1860's the first hotel was started for winter sports fans. St. Moritz has a year-round population of about 6,000 and is located at the upper end of the valley Engadin in the canton Graubunden. It sits at an elevation of 1775 meters above sea level (5824 feet). It is one of three cities that have hosted the Winter Olympic Games twice, the others being Innsbruck, Austria and Lake Placid, New York.
