Austin Cooper was born in Canada and received the bulk of his training in England. After serving in WWI he settled in London and began a career of poster designing starting with a commission from London Underground. In the next 20 years he established himself as one of the top poster designers in Britain. By the 1930's his work had become more pictorial and he produced work featured on this poster for the Empire Marketing Board, LNER (London North East Railway) as well as the London Underground. In the early 1940's he shifted away from poster art to a career as a full time artist.
