In an effort to raise money for the First World War, the government promoted early shopping to speed up the receipt of sales taxes.

This WW I poster, and others,were commissioned by the Federal government in hopes of generating federal taxes to assist in paying the costs of the War.

Liberty Bonds were used in WWI to raise money for the high cost of the war overseas. The expenses of sending so many troops and substantial equipment support to Europe were straining the reserves of the government. In 1917 the Federal budget was almost equal to the total budget for all the years between 1791 and 1916. Needing still more tax revenue, the War Revenue Act of 1917 lowered exemptions and greatly increased tax rates.

The artist, Haskell Coffin, was a well-known magazine illustrator, and figure and portrait painter in New York City. He was famous for his use of the allegorical female figure in many of the patriotic and war support posters he designed.
