The purpose of this fellowship program is to facilitate doctoral-level research with direct relevance to the rehabilitation of veterans with disabilities and to enhance rehabilitation research capacity within VA. Providing an opportunity for interested students to develop expertise in clinical research will prepare fellows from this program to assume leadership roles in rehabilitation research and clinical care after receiving their doctoral degrees. These fellowships are designed for graduate students who have completed their doctoral course work in a rehabilitation health care profession and are prepared to work on a research dissertation of relevance to the rehabilitation needs of veterans with disabilities. Students pursuing doctorates in rehabilitation health care professions such as rehabilitation engineering, occupational therapy, physical therapy, audiology, speech-language pathology, nursing, psychology, and orientation and mobility are encouraged to apply.

The Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Academic Affiliations, offers a two year post-PhD fellowship in health services research through its VA Health Services Research & Development Service Centers of Excellence. The Fellowship program’s mission is to train – and retain in VA careers – creative, independent, ethical and productive leaders in health services research and related fields. During their two-year tenures, fellows will maintain ongoing relationships with a program mentor and one or more research mentors in order to achieve two core fellowship goals:

• Complete an educational program in health services research as needed, and
• Conduct a health services research project which focuses on an aspect of provider behavior relevant to the Center and which merits presentation at meetings and publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Physician Post-Resident Fellowship

The fellowship provides two years of post-residency research, education, and clinical learning opportunities to eligible physicians. Fellows spend approximately 75 percent of their time in research and education and 25 percent in clinical care at competitively selected VA sites. Mentors of national stature provide guidance to fellows in rich learning environments. Graduates are expected to be role models in leading, developing, conducting, and evaluating innovative health services research in a variety of clinical settings.

Pre-/Post-Doctoral Nurse Fellowship Program

The purpose of this fellowship program is to provide nurses with the opportunity to broaden their scientific or research background, or to extend their potential for clinical research in nursing, which will result in the development of a cadre of highly trained nurse researchers who will contribute to the delivery of patient care within and outside of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The fellow is expected to complete a doctoral research dissertation on a topic that is relevant to the care of veterans and generally involves a veteran population. The fellow will receive intensive training in research methodology and techniques and research experiences at a VA facility under the direct supervision of an established investigator. Research interests of the applicant must be relevant to the care of veterans. Fellows are encouraged but not required to seek VA employment after completion of the fellowship.

Research Career Development awards are for fully trained scientists who are early in their research career. These awards provide mentoring and research support from 2-5 years of concentrated health services research activity, for each award. The Career Development awards are for those who need additional mentoring to become fully independent researchers. The four types of awards are the Career Development Award-1 (CDA-1), Career Development Award-2 (CDA-2), Career Development Transition Award (CDTA), and Career Development Enchanced Award (CDEA).
