2004 2nd National Conference on Coastal and Estuarine Habitat Restoration:
"Weaving Restoration into the Tapestry of Coastal Life"

On September 12-15, 2004, the habitat restoration community met in Seattle for the 2nd National Conference on Coastal and Estuarine Habitat Restoration to advance our knowledge, pace, scale and success of habitat restoration.

Highlights include:
  • 1,020 members of the habitat restoration community in attendance,
  • More than 300 concurrent and poster presentations,
  • Nearly 100 exhibitors in the Restoration Expo, and
  • 140 Conference Sponsors and Partners.

Program
The 2nd National Conference featured sessions in six programmatic themes: Best Practices; Science and Technology; Planning and Priority-Setting; Monitoring and Evaluation; Policy and Funding; and Community Involvement. The 4 day Conference offered over 50 sessions emphasizing lessons learned in these themes, as well as 14 field sessions highlighting techniques and lessons learned.

Participants included community, business and nonprofit leaders, consultants, restoration managers, scientists, tribes, educators, volunteers and others who engage in all aspects of habitat restoration. Conference attendees traveled from 36 states, Canada, Japan, Kenya, Ecuador, Belgium, Portugal, Honduras, Bangladesh and England. 140 sponsors and partners – representing all segments of the restoration community, including government agencies, nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, businesses and tribes – provided support for the conference.

Achieving Our Vision of Restoration
One million acres restored by 2010 - what will it take to get there? Conference participants helped craft the strategies for the next three years to reach this goal and achieve healthy coasts and estuaries for all. Based on the input, a draft strategy was developed to guide the restoration community and was presented during the closing plenary session and discussed by a panel of national leaders in restoration.

Overall, the conference succeeded in reuniting all the groups that have a stake in the restoration of our coasts and estuaries. Attendees left energized, galvanized and excited about securing healthy coasts and estuaries, and jazzed about attending the next meeting in New Orleans in 2006!
