Portland Research Enhancement Award Program

Portland Center for the study of chronic, comorbid mental and physical disorders

The Portland Center for the Study of Chronic, Comorbid Mental and Physical Disorders is a Health Services Research & Development (HSRD) Research Enhancement Award Program (REAP) located at the Portland, Oregon, Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Portland REAP's mission is to conduct interdisciplinary research to improve care for veterans afflicted with both physical and mental disorders. Current research efforts include:

  • Developing new conceptual models of how patients with chronic, comorbid mental and physical disorders and their providers understand the patients' illnesses and health care needs. These models will be used in studies that examine methods to improve decision making by providers and patients.
  • Investigating patient, clinician and systems-based barriers to delivering medical care to patients with mental disorders.
  • Testing novel methods of health care delivery to patients with both mental and physical disorders.
