HUD Announces $1.5 Billion in Funding to Help Homeless

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has announced $1.5 billion in funding to help people who are homeless or at risk for becoming homeless. Among the indicated risk factors for becoming homeless are mental health conditions and substance abuse; physical disabilities and other chronic conditions, including HIV/AIDS; and having a significant amount of medical debt. This funding is being made available under Title II of the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009. Eligible grantees are listed in Appendix A of the notice of funding. Hurricane Recovery Funding Announced

The departments of Homeland Security (DHS) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) have announced hundreds of millions of dollars in funding to stimulate long-term recovery in the wake of last year's devastating hurricane season and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. HUD and the state of Louisiana will launch a new five-year, $50 million program to offer permanent supportive housing to approximately 1,000 homeless individuals and families living with disabilities, such as a serious mental illness or substance abuse. HUD will also provide $23 million in rental assistance vouchers to the Louisiana Recovery Authority to support an estimated 2,000 elderly and disabled disaster victims.
