Build for your Navy! Enlist! Carpenters, machinists, electricians etc. Before trucks can proceed or airplanes can land, there must be roads and runways. The Seabees, following their motto, "We build,we fight," provide them. Rear Admiral Ben Moreel suggested the idea of Navy construction battalions and after the attack on Pearl Harbor, he recruited carpenters, machinists, electricians and masons whose average age was 37. The Admiral valued work experience over youth. Eventually, more than 325,000 men signed on with the Seabees. On about 300 islands in the South Pacific, they came ashore shortly after the Marines had landed and began building hospitals, housing and warehouses, in addition to roads and airstrips. Proud of their reputation as fighters, the Seabees are also good will ambassadors who have constructed orphanages, public utilities and highways all over the world.
