New Indian Wells tennis sponsor
The Indian Wells tournament, which annually draws most of the world's top men and women tennis players, has new financial backing and a new name.

Formerly the Pacific Life Open, the event now will be the BNP Paribas Open, with the title sponsor a France-based bank that's one of the largest in the world.

Chargers punch playoff ticket
In the most important game of an inconsistent season, the Chargers left no doubt.

Analysis: SoCal's pro team owners
What do fans want? Reasonable prices, a decent facility, a game experience that doesn't leave them feeling threatened, and full value for the money they spend. But most of all, they want a team that at least contends for championships. Some owners get it. Other owners (or at least their wives) wonder if fans would rather have a $30 million slugger or have the club donate 50 youth baseball fields, thereby confirming that they are totally out of touch with what their fans care about. So, in ranking Southern California's professional sports owners, I gave a lot of weight to (a) how high a priority winning seemed to be, and (b) whether an owner at least attempted to understand what the fans want.

Daredevil Maddison retesting limits
Robbie Maddison has a thing for celebrating New Year's Eve live on ESPN.

The network welcomed 2008 by airing a broadcast of Maddison jumping his motorcycle nearly the entire length of a football field, some 322 feet and 7 ½ inches, and setting a Guinness World Record in the process.
