The poor shut out of carbons market The poorest regions of the world — places that are awash in potential carbon offsets — are being shut out of a market now valued in excess of US$30 billion.

 

Report finds deforestation offers very little money compared to potential financial benefits  “What we discovered is that returns for deforestation are generally so paltry that if farmers and other land users were rewarded for the carbon stored in their trees and forests, it is highly likely that a large amount of deforestation and carbon emissions would be prevented.”

Events

World Congress of Agroforestry 2009 Nairobi, Kenya. The 2nd World Congress on Agroforestry will assess opportunities to leverage scientific agroforestry in promoting sustainable land use worldwide. The Congress will serve as a forum for agroforestry researchers, educators, practitioners and policy makers from around the world.

 

 

Fourteenth Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC and Fourth Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol 1 – 12 December 2008. Poznan, Poland. UNFCCC COP 14 and Kyoto Protocol COP/MOP 4 are scheduled to take place from 1-12 December 2008 in Poznan, Poland. These meetings will coincide with the 29th meetings of the UNFCCC’s subsidiary bodies.

 

 

Symposium on Tropical Rainforests and Agroforests under Global Change
5 – 9 October 2008.  Bali, Indonesia.  The International Scientific Conference on ‘Tropical Rainforests and Agroforests under Global Change’ will feature the following three interconnected themes of interdisciplinary research: 1) Agroforestry management in an ecological and socio-economic context, 2) Climate change effects on tropical rainforests and agroforests, 3) Integrated concepts of land use in tropical landscapes.  World Agroforestry Centre’s Meine van Noordwijk  will be one of the keynote  speakers at the conference.

 

 

ANAFE International Symposium: Mainstreaming climate change into Agricultural Education: Tools, Experiences and Challenges 28 July – 1 August 2008. Zomba, Malawi. ANAFE, one of the largest research networks in Africa currently hosted at the ICRAF headquarters in Nairobi, will host a symposium on climate change in Sub-Saharan Africa. The main objectives will be understanding the climate change challenges for agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa, mainstreaming climate change knowledge into agricultural education, and identifying recommendations on effective policies, institutions and capacity.

 

 

FAO High level conference on World Food Security and the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy 3 – 5 June 2008. Rome, Italy. FAO Headquarters in Rome will host the High-Level Conference on World Food Security and the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy. The Conference will build upon the work initiated at the Expert Meetings of January-April 2008. All FAO member countries, relevant inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations and other institutions will be invited to attend.
