Overseas Voter Website Allows Access to West Virginia Elections

In the 2008 general election, over 1,000 military and overseas voters were provided access to election information through a new portal introduced by West Virginia Secretary of State Betty Ireland in conjunction with the Overseas Vote Foundation. The portal (https://www.overseasvotefoundation.org/svid-west-virginia) has allowed interested West Virginians to register to vote, request an absentee ballot, and access other pertinent information as it relates to voting absentee ballots.

Not only did the portal offer a method for military and overseas voters to gain an understanding of the election process in West Virginia, it allowed over 250 individuals to create accounts to request an absentee ballot. This combined with the new methods introduced in West Virginia to forward an absentee ballot to military and overseas voters, by fax, email, or regular mail, provided additional means for these voters to participate.

“West Virginia has a high number of military members and overseas voters, and it is important that they have access to not only basic voting information but also to methods with which to cast their ballot,” Secretary of State Ireland stated.

Along with the Secretary of State, many county clerks encouraged overseas and military members to visit this portal as well. Harrison County Clerk, Susan Thomas, provided a direct link to the portal from her office’s website which received 103 hits during the ’08 election season.

“It is a great feeling when the services you offer assist hard to reach voters in casting a ballot. Our office, along with each county clerk, works diligently to ensure that everyone, including military members serving in remote areas, have the capability of having their voice heard,” Ireland said.

The overseas voter portal can be accessed through www.wvsos.comhttp://WVvotes.com, or through a participating county website.

Holiday Giving

Holiday Giving

The holiday season is a time for increased solicitation from charitable organizations intending to help those in need. The Secretary of State’s Office recognizes the fact that West Virginians have a known history for their generosity. However, in order to protect the citizens of West Virginia from fraudulent organizations we urge caution when giving to charities. We encourage citizens to make sure the soliciting charity is legitimate by asking questions such as the following:

  • Is the organization registered with the Office of Secretary of State?
  • What percentage of the donation is going to the actual cause and how much to administrative costs?
  • Is the caller being paid by a fundraising company?

Before writing a check or giving credit card information for your donation demand that the above information be given to you; in writing is best.

The Secretary of State’s Office has an excellent website where extensive information may be obtained via the Charities Database. The database contains all the active Charitable Organizations along with registration dates, purpose, how much money is raised, and how it is disbursed. Click here to view a complete list of this information.  For additional information citizens may contact a staff member of the Business & Licensing Division at 304-558-8000 who will answer any questions relating to Charitable Organizations, fundraising, and solicitation.

The Secretary of State’s Office encourages the citizens of West Virginia to continue their generous spirit of giving and support of charities they support and to have a safe and happy holiday season.
