Objective
To continue building on students' knowledge of intermediate-level German, introducing them to more complex grammatical and vocabulary patterns.
Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to interact in increasingly complex German conversations; will recognize more difficult grammatical patterns and will have a greater understanding of German culture.
Instruction
Major topics covered in the course will include dative forms and uses; hin and her; two-way prepositions; verbs - legen/liegen, setzen/sitzen, stellen/stehen, hangen, stecken; da- and wo- compounds; genitive forms and uses; dative as a substitute for the genitive; adjectives used as nouns; ordinal numbers; participles as adjectives; comparison of adjectives and adverbs; subjunctive II; modals in past-time subjunctive; würde construction; conditional sentences; als ob and als wenn constructions.
Vocabulary topics will include music; professions; ethnicities; gender; nationalities and age.
Methods of instruction include lecture, discussion, classroom exercises, case studies, role playing, problem solving, oral participation/proficiency, quizzes, and mid-term and final examinations.
