| Build on your knowledge of German grammar and vocabulary in this course, which introduces participants to complex sentence structure, the present perfect, dative and genitive cases, and the use of adjectives and adverbs. Enhance your vocabulary through current and engaging readings and discussions. Emphasis is on application of vocabulary and grammar in speaking, listening, reading and writing. |

Objective
To continue to provide the student with the ability to speak and understand oral and written German at a basic level.
Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to understand and use more complex grammatical structures; engage in simple conversations; and understand various aspects of contemporary German-speaking culture.
Instruction
Major topics covered in the course include verbs with vowel change - fahren and laufen; higher numbers; independent and dependent clauses; coordinating and subordinating conjunctions; modal auxiliaries; dative case for verbs; personal pronouns and prepositions; present perfect tense of weak verbs; strong verbs; separable-prefix verbs in the present tense; auxiliary sein with past participles; two-way prepositions; time expressions in the dative and accusative case; Da and Wo-compounds; genitive case; and ordinal numbers and dates.
Vocabulary topics will include transportation; travel plans; relationships; reporting on actions; giving reasons; birthdays; likes/dislikes; clothing; opinion; talking about the past; apologizing; making plans/preparations; chores, cultural differences; agreement/disagreement; giving factual information; expressing importance; discussing friends and family; stating wants/desires.
Methods of instruction include lecture, discussion, classroom exercises, case studies, role playing, problem solving, oral proficiency/participation, quizzes, mid-term and final examination.
