Especially for Families

From the littlest one in her stroller to her grandparents, there's something for every family member at Winterthur, an American country estate! Enjoy the beauty of the Winterthur Garden while riding a garden tram, strolling on our gentle walking paths, or experiencing the magic of our very special children's garden, Enchanted WoodsTM. Have you always thought that museums were hands-off territory? Not in our Touch-It Room*, where history fits into the palm of your hand. Special "touchables" in the Galleries also provide hands-on contact for all ages. The Elegant Entertaining, Once Upon a Family, and annual Yuletide** tours invite families into the former home of our founder, Henry Francis du Pont to see fabulous period rooms, fascinating historic objects, and, during the holiday season, a taste of celebrations of yesteryear. Winterthur also accommodates families on an everyday basis by providing child-friendly food in our restaurants, changing tables in restrooms, and stroller loans to ease tired little feet.

While Winterthur welcomes families throughout the year, we also invite our family visitors to special events on a monthly basis. From Breakfast with Santa to African American history presentations to the very special summer Terrific Tuesdays for the littlest ones, there's lots to do at Winterthur. Check our Calendar of Events for details!

* Please be sure to check the Winterthur Calendar to make sure the Touch-It Room is open during your expected visiting hours.

Before or after your visit, click here for an interactive story on apprenticeship and craftsmanship in the late 1800s. Perfect for ages 9 and up.

This program is made possible, in part, by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency committed to promoting and supporting the arts in Delaware.
