MEMBER PRIVILEGE®

Member Privilege® provides all members with a special overdraft protection convenience. It may:

  • Provide you with a safety net up to $600, including our non-sufficient funds (NSF) fee (per item) that may protect you if you overdraw your account.
  • Save you the additional charges associated with having a check returned to a merchant or creditor.

Members do not have to sign anything to get this new service, and there are no fees aside from the normal NSF fee for each item overdrawn. The limit will not be included in your balance provided by a teller, at the ATM or through Internet Banking or Audio Response Teller (ART).

Please be aware that if you overdraw your checking account due to an ACH, ATM (withdrawal, point-of-sale purchases or debit), Visa Check Card (withdrawal, point-of- sale purchases or debit) transaction or writing a check, your Member Privilege account will be activated for the funds available and you will be charged a $30.00 fee for each transaction.

If you have available funds in your savings account or goal line, a transfer will be made from that account first to cover the overdraft, before your Member Privilege is activated.

AFCU encourages members to manage their finances responsibly; however, the Member PrivilegeSM is designed to offer help when you need it as long as your checking account remains in good standing (defined as making regular deposits and bringing the account to a positive balance whenever it becomes negative).

Member Privilege® Overdraft Policy

An insufficient balance could result from several transactions, such as (1) the payment of share drafts, electronic funds transfers or other withdrawal requests; (2) payments authorized by you; (3) the return of unpaid items deposited by you; (4) the assessment of service charges; or (5) the deposit of items which, according to AFCU’s Funds Availability Policy, are treated as not yet available or finally paid. AFCU is not obligated to pay any item presented for payment if your account does not contain sufficient funds. However, if you maintain your share draft account in good standing (defined as making regular deposits, maintaining current status on AFCU loans and bringing your account to a positive balance whenever it becomes negative) and there are no legal orders outstanding, we may approve your reasonable overdrafts as a non-contractual courtesy. You may opt out of the privilege at any time, but you are responsible for any overdrawn balances at the time of opting out. Normally AFCU will not approve an overdraft for you in excess of the predetermined overdraft limit assigned to your account type. So, as not to exceed your limit, you should note that the amount of the overdraft plus the AFCU standard NSF fee (per item) will be deducted from the overdraft limit. AFCU may refuse to pay an overdraft for you at any time, even though we may have previously paid overdrafts for you. You will be notified by mail of any NSF items paid or returned that you may have; however, we have no obligation to notify you before we pay or return any item. The amount of any overdraft plus our standard NSF fee(s) that you owe us shall be due and payable upon demand. Member Privilege® cannot be used to make AFCU loan payments. If there is an overdraft paid by us on an account with more than one (1) owner on the signature card, each owner and agent, if applicable, drawing/presenting the item creating the overdraft shall be jointly and severally liable for such overdraft plus our standard NSF fee(s). Member Privilege® should not be viewed as an encouragement to overdraw your account. As always, we encourage you to manage your finances responsibly. In the event you would like to have this service removed from your account, you can do so by calling 202.479.2270 or 800.368.3552. You should note that your Member Privilege® limit will not be included in your balance provided by a teller, at the ATM, through Internet Banking or through Audio Response Teller (A.R.T.), our 24-hour telephone banking service. Limitations: Member Privilege® is a non-contractual courtesy which is available to individually/jointly owned accounts in good standing for personal or household use. Agriculture Federal Credit Union reserves the right to limit participation to one account per household and to discontinue this service without prior notice. Standard overdraft fees apply. Member Privilege® is a registered trademark of Pinnacle Financial Strategies.
