POSITION:
Deputy
Director General for Research and Partnerships
The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT)
is seeking a highly qualified and dynamic leader for the
position of Deputy Director General for Research and
Partnerships (DDG-R&P). The DDG-R&P reports to the Director
General and serves as a member of the Center’s Management
Committee. The position has responsibilities for facilitating
strategic planning, execution, management, monitoring and
communication of CIMMYT’s multidisciplinary research for
development activities. The DDG-R&P will work in close
collaboration with the Program Directors, DDG – Support Services
and the Executive Officer for Research Management. The position
is based at the Center’s headquarters near Texcoco, Mexico;
about 45 minutes drive from Mexico City’s airport. The initial
contract is for three years with the probability of renewal,
subject to performance.
Specific responsibilities include creating and sustaining
productive partnerships and cross-program collaborations.
Partnerships are typically formed with: sister institutions and
programs of the Consultative
Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR);
regional fora and sub-regional organizations; national
agricultural research and extension systems; the private sector,
including multinational seed companies; advanced research
institutions such as land grant universities, and;
non-governmental organizations. Associated responsibilities
include the human and technical quality of research, as well as
involvement in fund raising, especially with foundations, donor
governments and the newly emerging funding mechanism of the
CGIAR donor members.
We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications
Essential
-
PhD degree in an agricultural,
biological or social science and an extensive record of
research communication.

Minimum 15 years of experience
in research and research management including a significant
portion involving international research and donor
partnerships.

Collegial and diplomatic
interpersonal skills.
-
Clear understanding and
ability to communicate global and regional issues in
agriculture, food security and rural development.
-
Willingness to travel
extensively, especially in the developing world.
Desirable
-
Broad networking and
partnerships experience in agricultural
research-for-development especially in Africa, Asia and
Latin America.

Proven ability to establish
and nurture a multi-cultural, gender sensitive,
multi-disciplinary research-for-development team.

Demonstrated experience in
management of intellectual property and genetic resources.

Proficiency in Spanish or
other major international or regional language.

Knowledge of maize and wheat
and their cropping systems in the developing world.
CIMMYT is an internationally
funded, nonprofit, scientific research, training and development
organization dedicated to improving the nutrition, food security
and livelihoods of the world’s poor. CIMMYT is a global leader
in maize and wheat germplasm preservation, trait discovery, crop
variety enhancement, cropping systems improvement and
socio-economic analysis for the developing world. The Center has
an annual budget of US$45 million and a staff of 600, including
80 internationally recruited staff. Our headquarters and four
research stations are located in Mexico and we have regional
centers and offices in 12 other countries, especially in eastern
and southern Africa. Rapid growth is occurring in South and East
Asia.
