Trait Marker Discovery, Scientist Lead

We are seeking a Scientist to lead a team that works in
an interdisciplinary environment to identify molecular tools
that will hasten the introduction of new traits into commercial
lines. The successful candidate will lead a small research team
that will collaborate across the R&D organization. The team will
be located in Woodland, California. The successful
applicant will join a diverse team and matrix organization of
researchers that utilize natural genetic variation to improve
fruit and vegetable crops.
Responsibilities:

Manage the molecular facets of
high resolution mapping of loci controlling strategic traits
in Cucurbit crops.

Manage the molecular facets of
eliminating linkage drag around priority loci to create
elite breeding events in Cucurbit crops.
-
Manage the optimization of
markers for trait/event selection in a high throughput
marker assisted selection environment.
-
Manage testing and deployment
of markers to genotyping team and breeder clients to assure
thorough understanding of the process and scope for applying
each new marker.

Coordinate timing and
logistics of program with New Trait Development and
Genotyping lab teams to achieve efficient transfer of data
and biological materials to keep projects on timelines.

Work with the Marker Discovery
team to incorporate new molecular techniques for rapid
product advancement.

Develop high competence in
using genome databases and leveraging sequence resources to
expedite high resolution mapping and breeding event
creation.

Select and develop a skilled
and motivated team energized by learning, improving, and
taking independent initiative to deliver results.

Support company policies on
safety in the work place, provide team leadership and role
modeling for safety and instill a committed sense of
ownership toward safety within the team.

Assure that program maintains
compliance with federal regulatory agencies and Monsanto
Business Conduct standards.
Required
Skills/Experience/Attributes:
-
PhD in plant breeding,
genetics, plant molecular biology or a related field.

Expertise in molecular biology
and marker technologies.
-
Excellent organizational,
interpersonal and communication skills.
Desired
Skills/Experience/Attributes:
-
Post-doctoral experience.
-
Experience working in a
goal-oriented, team environment.
-
Experience with databases,
sequence analysis, and LIMS systems.
