POSITION:  Research Assistant

Monsanto has a Research Assistant position in DeForest, Wisconsin.

Responsibilities:

  • Spring/Summer:
    o Assist in organization of planting and field research, including organizing seed, staking, equipment checks and irrigation.
    o Work with and help manage seasonal labor; manage weeds, harvest and sample and collect data.
    o Operate equipment for planting, cultivation, harvest, and possibly, herbicide application.
    o Perform minor equipment repairs and adjustments.

  • Fall/Winter:
    o Assist in all aspects of greenhouse research (5,400 sq. ft.), including seed increases, cataloging materials, plant and greenhouse maintenance and F1 and Bc pollinations.

  • Fulfill office support duties, including data entry.

Required Skills/Experience/Attributes:

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university with at least one year of related experience and/or training; Master’s degree is a plus.

  • Basic horticultural and agricultural skills in plant production.

  • Computer skills with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn other software systems.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical equipment and related shop skills.

Desired Skills/Experience/Attributes:

  • Exposure to agricultural research.

  • Possess or have the ability to obtain a pesticide applicator’s license and forklift license.

  • Ability to work effectively while following all safety regulations.

  • The ability to effectively communicate in Spanish is strongly desired.

  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.

Other Information:

  • Some travel within the state to off-site research locations required.

  • Overtime hours during the summer as determined by weather; possible Saturday work during peak periods.

  • Share in weekend watering of greenhouses during the winter.
