POSITION:
Plant
Breeder / Pathologist
Location: Shakopee,
Minnesota
Betaseed Inc. is looking for a Plant Breeder/Pathologist for
its Shakopee research station in MN. Betaseed breeds and
produces new varieties of hybrid sugar beet seed for the beet
sugar industry and growers and is a wholly owned subsidiary of
KWS SAAT AG, Germany. Betaseed
is the largest supplier of sugar beet seeds in North America.
Responsibilities:
-
Conduct trials to evaluate
sugar beet germplasm for disease tolerance/other traits in
the field and greenhouse
-
Participate in breeding
selections and in seed production activities/planning.

Collect, analyze and summarize
statistical data and prepare reports.
-
Stay informed of changes in
the disease/pest situation affecting commercial growers and
of new developments in evaluation techniques
-
Assist sales and marketing
teams by giving presentations and providing technical
assistance.

Apply new technologies such as
use of molecular markers in breeding.

Work as a team member with
other Betaseed breeders.

Establish and maintain
contacts with sugar company representatives and public
research institutes (USDA, Universities etc.).
Qualifications:
-
Minimum education: M.S. in
Plant Pathology/ Plant Breeding & Genetics or related
scientific field is desirable. 0-3 years experience.

Strong background in plant
pathology and statistical data analysis.

Skills in databank management.
Other Duties/skills include:
-
Active engagement in multiple
phases of plant pathology and plant breeding programs
including working with GMO traits.

Ability/willingness to perform
a wide variety of activities at the research station.

Desire/ability to work as a
team player and team leader.
-
Possess effective
communication skills.
-
Willingness to travel
domestically and internationally for meetings, research and
training sessions.

Ability and willingness to
supervise/manage people
This position reports to the plant
breeder for the Eastern region. The Sugar Beet Breeder is a
member of the breeding team of the KWS SAAT AG, Germany. This
will require the building of a close working relationship with
the worldwide sugar beet breeding program of KWS SAAT AG and
cooperation with the breeders of other sugar beet markets.
