POSITION:
Sugar Beet
Breeder
Location: Kimberly, Idaho
Betaseed, Inc. is looking for a sugar
beet breeder for its Kimberly research station in Idaho.
Betaseed breeds and produces new varieties of hybrid sugar beet
seed for the beet sugar industry and growers and is a wholly
owned subsidiary of KWS SAAT AG, Germany. Betaseed is the
largest supplier of sugar beet seeds in North America.
Responsibilities:
-
Conduct Curly top resistance
breeding program.
-
Conduct a GMO breeding
program.
-
Conduct and evaluate trials,
breeding nurseries and seed production planning.
-
Perform and analyze
statistical data and prepare reports.
-
Application of new
technologies such as use of molecular markers in breeding.

Work as a team member with
other Betaseed breeders.
-
Interact with Betaseed sales
and marketing team.
-
Establish and maintain
contacts with public research institutes (USDA, Universities
etc.).
Qualifications:
-
Ph.D. in Plant Breeding &
Genetics or related scientific field and 2-5 years
comparable experience breeding crops for commercial
applications.

Strong background in plant
breeding and statistical data analysis.
-
Skills in databank management
highly desirable.
Other Duties/skills include:
-
Hiring, training and
supervising technical staff.
-
Active engagement in multiple
phases of plant breeding, including GMO traits.

Developing and managing
departmental budgets.

Ability/willingness to perform
a wide variety of activities at the research station.

Desire/ability to work as a
team player and team leader.
-
Effective communication
skills.
-
Willingness to travel
domestically and internationally for research meetings and
training sessions.
This position reports directly to
the Western Director of Research. The Sugar Beet Breeder is a
member of the breeding team of the
KWS Saat AG, Germany. This will require the building of a
close working relationship with the worldwide sugar beet
breeding program of KWS Saat AG and cooperation with the
breeders of other sugar beet markets.
