As part of the Restore America's Estuaries mission, we work hard to ensure that on-the-ground restoration occurs in communities across the country. A vision to restore estuaries to health and a goal to restore one million acres of estuarine habitat by 2010. This is done one community, one estuary, one project at a time. Through the program, we have engaged in more than 500 community-based projects, restoring more than 56,000 acres of wetland habitat and 100 miles of anadromous river habitat. Restore America's Estuaries and its eleven member organizations have involved more than 256,000 volunteers nationally over the past five years, including students, teachers, property owners, families, corporate teams, community and faith-based groups and other local citizens.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Restoration Center's Community-based Restoration Program and Restore America's Estuaries entered into a 3-year national partnership in 2001 to restore our nation's estuaries. This partnership was renewed in 2004 and 2007, each for another 3 years. The partnership is consistent with both organizations' goals and objectives to maximize Federal, state and local resources and talents to restore one million acres of estuarine habitat by 2010.

Community-based restoration projects are currently jointly funded in the following estuaries:
  • Gulf of Maine
  • Narragansett Bay
  • Long Island Sound
  • Hudson-Raritan Estuary
  • Delaware Bay
  • Chesapeake Bay
  • North Carolina's Albermarle, Pamlico, Core, and Stump Sounds
  • Tampa Bay
  • Louisiana's Mississippi Delta
  • Galveston Bay
  • San Francisco Bay
  • Puget Sound
