RAE Presents Awards to U.S. Senator Reed and U.S. Senator Whitehouse

RAE Presents Awards to U.S. Senator Reed and U.S. Senator Whitehouse
At the Restore America's Estuaries (RAE) 4th National Conference on Coastal and Estuarine Habitat Restoration in Providence, Rhode Island, RAE presented Senators Reed (D-RI) and Whitehouse (D-RI) with awards. Both Rhode Island Senators were presented with awards to recognize their leadership, dedication, and passion for protecting and restoring our nation's precious estuaries.

RAE Board Member, Curt Spalding from Save the Bay—Narragansett Bay presented Senator Reed with a RAE Presidents Award during the conference's opening plenary. Curt spoke about Senator Reed's accomplishments, commitment, and dedication. Senator Reed has helped support funding for coastal and estuarine habitat restoration through his work on the Appropriations Committee, Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies. In addition, last year, Senator Reed introduced the No Child Left Inside Act of 2007, which would strengthen environmental education. Senator Reed accepted the award and spoke during the conference's opening plenary.

RAE Board Chair, Bob Stokes from Galveston Bay Foundation and Board Member, Curt Spalding from Save the Bay—Narragansett Bay presented Senator Whitehouse with the RAE Habitat Restoration Champion Award during the awards luncheon. Senator Whitehouse has been a leader on coastal and estuarine issues, helping to get the Estuary Restoration Act reauthorized through the Water Resources Development Act of 2007. Senator Whitehouse has also been committed to helping ensure coastal communities have the capacity and funding they need to prepare and plan for the impacts of climate change. Senator Whitehouse accepted the award and spoke during the coastal awards luncheon.

RAE was pleased to honor two such dedicated Senators for their leadership role in protecting and restoring coasts and estuaries.
