Atlas of Injury Mortality Among American Indian and Alaska Native Children and Youth, 1989-1998 During 1989-1998, injuries caused the deaths of 3,718 Native American children, aged 0-19 years, residing in the Indian Health Service areas. Injury is the leading cause of death for all American children, but poses a particular threat to Native American children. To reduce this disparity, increased efforts should be made to protect Native American children and to narrow the gap with other children in America. Read
