California International Agricultural Exports in 2007
(AIC Issues Brief #35, December 2008, pdf, 350kb). William A. Matthews and Daniel A. Sumner.

Traceability, Food Safety, and Industry Reputation

(Nov., 2008, pdf, 325 kb) Sebastien Pouliot and Daniel A. Sumner.
When authorities are unable to identify the origin of the tainted product, food recalls are often applied to all suppliers, including to products not linked to the contamination. One role of traceability is to identify more specifically the origin of a product, enabling more targeted recalls. In this article, we show how increased traceability contributes to protect the reputation of firms by potentially limiting the size of product recalls.

Proceedings from "Causes and Consequences of the Food Price Crisis", October 2008. Farm commodity prices, like oil prices, have begun to fall in recent weeks, but prices of several commodities broke record highs during the summer. To show the confluence of factors driving food prices, a symposium was hosted by the Giannini Foundation. Agricultural economists from UC Berkeley and UC Davis spoke.
To see the slides from the symposium, go to http://are.berkeley.edu/foodcrisis/

The Global Livestock CRSP has made available nine podcasts for those interested in hearing the individual speakers and their topics at the Symposium, they are available here.

Market Power in the Corn Sector: How Does It Affect the Impacts of the Ethanol Subsidy? (Feb. 2008, pdf, 190KB) University of California Agricultural Issues Center. Market power is discussed frequently in debates about subsidies for ethanol production. The structural conditions in the corn industry create a case for concerns about market power. This paper by Tina L. Saitone, Richard J. Sexton and Steven E. Sexton develops an analytical model for determining the production and price impacts and the distribution of benefits from the U.S. ethanol subsidy when upstream sellers in the seed sector and downstream buyers in the processing sector may exercise market power. Results demonstrate that the impacts on prices and output are limited for modest departures from competition. Distributional impacts are much greater. Seed producers and corn processors with market power are able to capture relatively large shares of the benefits of the subsidy.
