CAMP 5 FIRE ACTIVITY UPDATE
RAPID CITY, SD: APRIL 17, 2005
The Camp 5 Fire, reported at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday April 17, is located
on Black Hills National Forest land, approximately 1 ½ miles
northwest of Galena or 3 miles southeast of the Old Deadwood Forest
Service Office on Highway 14A.
The fire is reported to be 30 – 45 acres in size. Engines
from the Black Hills National Forest, the SD Division of Wildland
Fire Suppression, and several volunteer fire departments have responded.
Five hand crews have been dispatched. An airplane will launch at
7:00 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2005, to do aerial reconnaissance.
It has been reported that the fire is spotting 100 – 200
yards with isolated torching and short sustained crowning.
Boulder Canyon Highway (14A) was closed for approximately two hours
on Sunday. State Radio reported that the Lawrence County Sheriff’s
office reopened the highway at 7:30 p.m.
The fire information office will remain open as long as necessary
to provide additional updates. A new update is expected to be available
Monday morning about 9am.
