The Changing Demographic Profile of Rural Areas
By Annabel Kirschner (Washington State University), E. Helen Berry (Utah State University) and Nina Glasgow (Cornell University)
The demographic profile of rural and small town America has changed rapidly and significantly in recent decades. The continued out-migration of increasingly educated young adults, the in-migration of ethnic minorities, and the growing numbers of retirees, have resulted in rural communities where residents are older, more ethnically diverse, and more likely to be female than in the recent past. These changes have transformed rural economies and are influencing a range of public policies.
