"Couldn't have been more helpful"
Clow Beck Children's Farm

Environmental sewage treatment

Sanitation system for Viscri village, Romania
Following advice from CAT's Biology Department, the compost toilets throughout the village are being upgraded and a reed bed system will be installed for the entire village to treat grey water discharge. This ancient Saxon village will now be able to welcome Western tourists without placing an additional burden on natural resources. In addition the work will provide local training and employment.

Eco-housing

Feasibility study for eco-housing for Gwynedd County Council, Snowdonia Housing Association
CAT investigated the feasibility of introducing eco-housing concepts into this rural area of North Wales. The assessment included elements such as passive solar design, use of environmentally-friendly locally sourced materials, training requirements, housing needs and costs. These will be applied to both new build and renovations.

Renewable energy

Survey and proposals for use of photovoltaics in remote locations for the Environment Agency
CAT assessed remote flood monitoring systems to determine their suitability for powering with photovoltaics. 171 sites in the South East of England were surveyed and the results compiled as a database on CD-ROM. CAT has prepared a design, including modifications to allow for remote telemetry at a selection of locations.

Ecocentre design

Millennium Environmental Centre, ECOS, for Ballymena Borough Council
An ambitious project for a town park on derelict land, including a national centre for environmental advice, education and research, now open to the public. CAT advised on the nature of both the building itself and the exhibitions it should house on renewable energy technologies and sustainable development issues. Our design proposals won funding from the Millennium Commission.

A typical smaller project

Environmental building, energy and sanitation advice for Clow Beck Children's Farm
Three members of the project team booked a visit to CAT equipped with plans, photos, diagrams - and questions! - to spend an hour or two with one of CAT's engineers, biologists and environmental builders. They looked at examples of applicable designs installed at the Centre for Alternative Technology and discussed how to modify them for their own project. They reported that "the sessions were very useful, the consultants couldn't have been more helpful." Later, they decided to ask CAT's Biology Department to write site-specific reed bed sanitation guidelines.

An example of one of CAT's own projects

Autonomous Environmental Information Centre for CAT's own visitor centre, Machynlleth, Wales
Our Building, Engineering, and Biology Departments worked with future users of the building to create one of the greenest public buildings in the UK. Its materials have extremely low embodied energy and its use of water and energy are remarkably small. The building itself contains no cement, is virtually PVC-free and has innovative features such as rammed earth supporting columns, 120m2 of solar water heating collectors connected to the rest of the site via a heat main, local Welsh wool insulation, natural finishes and the most ecological public toilets in Britain. The result is a £600,000 building that demonstrates the potential of environmentally-friendly building materials and techniques. Awarded the National Eisteddfod of Wales Gold Medal in Architecture "for the building and to recognise the contribution the ongoing work at the Centre is making to the culture of modern Wales".

CAT corporate training

CAT also runs a wide range of individual and corporate training in environmental techniques. We prepare tailor-made courses to satisfy a company's particular needs. For individuals we run a comprehensive range of intensive residential courses in practical environmental skills.
