Day Visits: Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment for School Day Visits to CAT

List of hazards:

  • Slips, trips, cuts and bruises.
  • Risk of injury if not seated when on cliff railway
  • Getting wet and/or cold from weather
  • Bee stings
  • Getting wet from interacting with displays or falling in lakes/ponds
  • Exposure to zoonotic diseases through contact with animals in smallholding
  • Unauthorised entry to restricted areas of site, such as workshops, scree slopes, construction sites or areas undergoing maintenance
  • Pupils leaving site without teachers' knowledge.

People affected by hazards:

  • Teachers and pupils, other visitors
Current precautions:
  • It is advisable to have a teacher/pupil ratio of 1:6 for under 11's and 1:10 for over 11's. We do encourage schools to bring extra adults if possible. Schools are expected to make their own judgement about how closely to supervise groups based on their knowledge of pupils.
  • We advise that suitable clothing be worn.
  • We ask that everyone should remain seated on the train until it has stopped moving.
  • In the introductory talk school groups are advised not to run around while on site
  • Signs are in place warning people to use the hand washing facilities provided after visiting the smallholding.
  • Restricted areas are clearly signed and cordoned off. Ensure that pupils are aware of the importance of staying out of these areas.
  • No one under the age of 16 is allowed to travel on the train unaccompanied by an adult.

Outstanding risks that are not reduced to a minimum by the current precautions:

  • Expectant mothers should avoid contact with the goats because of the risk of transmission of Ovine Chlamydiosis.

Level of Risk:
Low
