The Press-Enterprise Archives FAQ

Q: How do I obtain a story from The Press-Enterprise Archives?

A: Go to the Search page and fill out the search fields. Click on the Search button. A list of stories containing the words you searched for will appear. The list includes the story headline and the first several lines of the story, followed by a link instructing you to "Click here for complete text."

If you decide to purchase one of the stories to see the full text, click on the link related to that story. You will be asked for payment information. Payment must be by credit card. The fee for the full text of stories retrieved from The Press-Enterprise Archives via PE.com is $2.95 per story. Discount packages are available for various quantities of stories.

Once you have entered your payment information, you will have the opportunity to register as a regular user of The Press-Enterprise Archives. After completing registration (or confirming your registration information if you are a returning registrant), the full text of the story will be displayed. You may print the story using your Web browser's print function. You may also check a box to have the story e-mailed to you.

Q: Is my credit card information secure?

A: Your credit card information will be encrypted and transmitted via a secure server. For maximum security, your credit card information will not be stored after each online session.

Q: What's available in The Press-Enterprise Archives?

A: All staff-written stories from The Press-Enterprise since Sept. 28, 1992, and from The Business Press since Sept. 11, 1995. The archives also include some other stories to which the staff substantially contributed. Where a story appeared in more than one edition of The Press-Enterprise, only the longest and most complete version appears in the archives.

Q: What won't I find in The Press-Enterprise Archives?

A: Stories from wire services or syndicates. Stories that appeared before Sept. 28, 1992. Other examples: Plain, unchanging lists of community events (except for news briefs), movie and event lists such as appear in The Guide, sports statistics tables (except when they appear as part of a story), advertisements.

Photographs and graphics will not be displayed in the Archives. Versions of stories are text-only. For information on purchasing prints of photographs from The Press-Enterprise, contact our photo department by calling (951) 368-9509.

Q: What if I want articles that appeared before Sept. 28, 1992?

A: The Press-Enterprise News Library does not accept public calls or requests.

For articles before 1992, you may contact the public library in your area. Most libraries subscribe to or have computer links to our paper.

Q: I need help. Who should I call or e-mail?

A: E-mail feedback@pe.com for questions about specific stories on PE.com or in The Press-Enterprise and/or The Business Press.

If you have questions about your account, or with your username or password, call 1-800-896-5587 or e-mail newslibrary@newsbank.com. Technicians will not be able to help with searches, but they can help with account information.

A: No. The fee you pay to access a story does not give you the right or permission to republish it in any form. See our Terms of Service.
