Press Release: Michigan Integrated Food & Farming Systems (MIFFS) Helps Create 'Buy Fresh, Buy Local, Select Michigan Day' - September 15th has been designated “Buy Fresh, Buy Local, Select Michigan Day”, through a resolution introduced by Representative David Farhat – 91st District. Michigan Food & Farming Sytems – MIFFS and the Michigan Department of Agriculture – MDA have been partners for several local, regional and state agricultural initiatives and are sponsors of this state designated day. The resolution was unanimously passed by the Michigan House to encourage citizens to “Buy Fresh and Buy Local” which supports and preserves Michigan’s agricultural heritage and contributes to the growth of the state’s economy.

Press Release: Food Systems Leadership Institute Announces 2005 Scholars - The Food Systems Leadership Institute (FSLI), a partnership between NASULGC and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, hosted by the University of North Carolina, has announced a select group of participants for its inaugural leadership institute. These scholars will participate in a program dedicated to advancing and strengthening the food system by developing strong and effective leaders prepared to bring cultural change to food system organizations, with a special focus on our nation's land-grant universities.

Growing Together: Starting a School Garden, Building Community - How have kindergartners from Williamsburg, teenagers from Holyoke, overworked teachers and busy parents built a teaching garden in the playground at Williamsburg's Helen James School, and made it a part of the curriculum used by each class in the school?  Fertile Ground and the Local Hero Schools Network will present a workshop showcasing the garden, now in its third year, on Tuesday, June 7, 2005 from 3:30-5:30 pm.

5/10/2005: Iowa State University Study Shows Positive Economic Impact of Iowa Farmers' Markets - Farmers' markets not only are a great place to get fresh produce, flowers and baked goods, they also may generate an estimated $20.8 million in sales and more than 325 jobs for the Iowa economy. These figures are from an economic analysis prepared for the Regional Food Systems Working Group (RFSWG) led by the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture. To do the analysis, Iowa State University economist Daniel Otto and graduate student Theresa Varner used information collected during the 2004 market season for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) and the Iowa Farmers' Market Association (IFMA).

PASA Conference on February 3, 4, and 5, 2005 - In early February, over 1400 farmers and consumers will gather for the 14th annual Farming for the Future conference in State College, Pennsylvania. Since its inception in 1992, the conference, which is hosted by the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), has gained in popularity and reputation to become one of the largest sustainable agriculture conferences in the nation.
