ClassroomCenter for Teaching and Learning


The Center for Teaching and Learning (formerly the Center for School Change) has as its principal mission the improvement of teaching and learning across all disciplines.

The Center creates opportunities for university faculty to strengthen teaching efforts through research-based methodologies, professional development experiences, advanced studies and assessment practices that lead to improved teaching and student learning.

About the Center

The Center operates as part of the University’s Title III Grant. Title III is a federal government assistance program given to historically Black colleges and Universities. Title III assures equity in educational opportunities for all students.

The Center works in conjunction with the Title III office to assure that university faculty are equipped with the tools and resources needed to enrich their teaching in order to increase student learning.

All expenditures submitted by the Center to the Title III office must be allowable under federal guidelines.

Services

The Center for Teaching and Learning serves the University faculty by providing:

Research Publications Seminars Conferences
Financial Assistance with Research Assistance with Publications Conducting Workshops and Seminars Professional Conferences
The Center helps university faculty by providing mini-grants for the purpose of research.
The Center supports and helps university faculty with publication of research or submission of publications to various journals or periodicals.
The Center sponsors various workshops and seminars for university faculty. These workshops and seminars are targeted at enhancing the teaching skills of university faculty. The Center supports university faculty attending Professional Conferences.

2009 Fellowship Project Opportunity

The NASA Administrator's Fellowship Project (NAFP) enhances the professional development for NASA employees as well as STEM faculty from Minority Institutions while building and strengthening the STEM infrastructure at MIs.

Mini-Grant

Mini-Grant Applications are now being accepted for the 2008-2009 Year and the deadline for submissions is October 27, 2008

There are now two (2) types of grants:

  1. Research Grant - $1,500 (3 awards will be made on meritorious research)
  2. Innovative Teaching Grant - $1,000 (2 awards will be made on meritorious teaching innovation)

January 15, 2009 “IES Practice Guide for Adolescent Literacy Workshop”
Longwood Room, Bank of America Building 8am – 3pm
The Center for Teaching & Learning is co-hosting an event with The Regional Educational Laboratory Mid-Atlantic of Rutgers University. This event is statewide and will encompass participants from Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey. There will be a break for lunch at the University Café.

February 12, 2009 “Fourth Annual Mini-Grant Research Presentations Part II”
Bank of America Building 309 11 am – 1 pm
Featuring Dr. Constant B. Beugre, Associate Professor & Dr. Kathlyn Wilson, Assistant Professor, both of the Management Department. Also presenting will be Dr. Yvonne Stringfield, Chair of the Nursing Department and, Dr. Clytrice Watson, Assistant Professor of the Biology Department. September 17, 2008 “The Center for Teaching & Learning Advisory Board Meeting”

This meeting identified challenges and outlined possible solutions that would address the Centers’ ability to effectively promote Professional Development Workshops that would benefit our Teaching Community here at Delaware State University.  The Advisory Boards’ next meeting will be April 20, 2009.

September 25, 2008 “2008 Leadership Seminar”

With Mr. David Oakes, Skills Path On-Site Training.
This workshop provided time management, communication, and teambuilding skills for managers and supervisors.  In addition there were key points to how to conduct effective & excellent meetings.

September 29, 2008 “Dr. Frank Livoy & Dr. Joe Fitzpatrick of Rutgers University’s Research Laboratory”
EH 109 10am – 12 noon
This meeting provided information about research studies and websites to obtain research data that would be useful to a wide variety of educators.  In addition there were discussions about federally funded lads under the direction of the Institute for Education Science, which has 9 other regional laboratories throughout the country.  For further information of to receive Dr. Livoy or Dr. Fitzpatrick’s contact information please contact our office.
