Bioavailability

Superfund Basic Research Program

The bioavailability of an environmental contaminant is the degree and rate at which the substance is absorbed into living organisms. Misinterpreting a contaminant's bioavailability can affect risk assessments, selection of appropriate remediation strategies, and insights on fate and transport. SBRP-funded research has focused on the bioavailability of numerous substances, as it is a critical factor in the decision-making process related to both public health and remediation strategies.
