auto-generated map
Interactive maps: Continental US, Hawaii, Puerto Rico

In 2008, twelve individuals were caught.  Two of Alabama, two off South Carolina, one off Florida, and 7 off North Carolina.

Ecology: This species can survive in salinities of 3-35 ppt and at temperatures of 25-33 degrees C (McCann et al. 1996).

Means of Introduction: Escape from aquaculture facilities.  It is speculated that the individual captured off Alabama may have escaped a nearby aquaculture facility during floods from Hurricane Katrina or Rita the previous year.

Status: Reported from South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana and North Carolina.

Impact of Introduction: Unknown.  However, aquacultured shrimp could present a disease threat to wild stocks.

Remarks: It is not known whether the increased occurrences in North Carolina are from more individuals or are due to better reporting because of increased outreach efforts to shrimpers.
