Standards Referenced by ADAAG

The ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) reference several industry standards. Most references are to versions of the standards that were current at the time ADAAG was first developed. As part of the upcoming revision of ADAAG, these references will be updated to more recent editions of the standards. Information on these standards, including how to order copies, is provided below. Questions about the standards should be directed to the organizations listed.

ASME A17.1-1990, Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators
ADAAG 4.10.1 requires that elevators meet the ASME A17.1-1990 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators. Platform (wheelchair) lifts under ADAAG 4.11.2 must meet Section XX of this code, the Safety Standard for Platform Lifts and Stairway Chairlifts. (Note: More recent versions of the ASME A17.1 Safety Code do not include provisions contained in Section XX for platform lifts; these provisions are now provided in a new separate standard known as the ASME A18.1-1999 Safety Standard for Platform Lifts and Stairway Chairlifts.) ANSI/BHMA A156.10-1985 American National Standard for Power Operated Pedestrian Doors

ANSI A156.19-1984 American National Standard for Power Assist and Low Energy Power Operated Doors

Automated doors are classified by industry standards according to the level of force produced by the door opening. Fully automatic doors, which produce the most force, are usually activated through control mats or sensory devices and are often used in facilities with heavy traffic such as airport terminals and grocery stores. Fully automatic doors are required by ADAAG 4.13.12 to comply with the ANSI/BHMA A156.10-1985 American National Standard for Power Operated Pedestrian Doors. Low-powered and power-assisted doors must meet the ANSI A156.19-1984 American National Standard for Power Assist and Low Energy Power Operated Doors. Low-powered doors are typically used at entries with lower levels of traffic to provide an alternative to manual doors, including revolving doors, in the same location. Most operate slowly, allow manual opening, and are often activated by a push button or plate. Power-assisted doors facilitate door opening by reducing the resistance force of closers.

ASTM F 1487-98 Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use

ASTM F 1951-99 Standard Specification for Determination of Accessibility of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment

ASTM F 1292-99 Standard Specification for Impact Attenuation of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment

A new supplement to ADAAG covering play areas references several standards from the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). The definition of "Use Zone" in ADAAG 3.5 relies on the ASTM F 1487-98 Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use. ADAAG 15.6.7 requires that ground surfaces along accessible routes, clear floor or ground spaces, and maneuvering spaces within play areas comply with the ASTM F 1951-99 Standard Specification for Determination of Accessibility of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment. The ground surfaces must be inspected and maintained regularly and frequently to ensure continued compliance with this standard. If located within use zones, the ground surfaces also must comply with the ASTM F 1292-99 Standard Specification for Impact Attenuation of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment.
