Research Interest

My breeding program has two main objectives: basic research and development  and utilization of new cultivars of several species for use as forage and cover crops. Basic research comprises three main areas.  The first is to identify and evaluate molecular, physiological and morphological traits that can be used as selection criteria in developing germplasm of forages with enhanced persistence, tolerance to environmental stress, yield, seedling vigor and disease resistance . The second is to study population genetics, genetic structure and genotype-environment interactions to formulate selection strategies conducive to the development of improved germplasm through conventional and unconventional breeding techniques. The third is to assist and advise the National Plant Germplasm System in the evaluation and maintenance of germplasm of legume crops used as forage and ground cover.

Cultivar development has focused on sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.), sericea lespedeza [Lespedeza cuneata (Dumont de Courset) G. Don], hairy vetch (Vicia villosa L.), common vetch (Vicia sativa L.), caley peas (Lathyrus hirsutus L.) crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.), red clover (T. pratense L.) and white clover (T. repens L.). Cultivar development has been conducted in partial cooperation with Mr. C.M. Owsley and Mr. M.  Kirkland, USDA-NRCS. Utilization of cultivars developed includes cooperative studies on the effect of the tannin containing sericea lespedeza on gastrointestinal parasites of ruminants, use as cover crops and as forage crops.
