Federally Funded Facilities

Facilities that are federally funded must comply with accessibility standards under the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA). The ABA applies to facilities designed, built, altered, or leased with federal funds. Several agencies maintain ABA standards which are being revised according to guidelines the Board jointly updated under the ABA and the ADA. The General Services Administration (GSA) has adopted updated ABA standards that apply to most facilities covered by the ABA (except postal, residential, and military facilities). The U.S. Postal Services (USPS) has issued similar standards for facilities under its jurisdiction. The Department of Housing (HUD) and the Department of Defense (DOD) are in the processing of adopting updated ABA standards in place of the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards (UFAS). HUD's standards apply to federally funded housing, and DOD's standards cover military facilities.
