Dr. Andy Kirk
Ph.D. Programs
The History Department's Ph.D. program, begun in 1991, embodies the ultimate expression of the Department's mission to generate and disseminate new knowledge through research, reflection, and publication. The major field of specialization is in the American West. The program seeks to provide graduates with the capacity for original research and thought, and the qualifications for employment in secondary schools, community colleges and universities. Our first graduate received her degree in 1996. Learn more about the Ph.D. program »
Masters Program
The History Department's Master's program, one of the oldest graduate programs at UNLV, aims to broaden and to deepen critical understanding of the whole heritage of human experience. It is also designed to sharpen scholarly skills and develop a degree of specialized expertise in fields drawn from the histories of Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States as well as public history. The program strikes a balance between teaching and research, familiarizing students with research methods, traditional and contemporary interpretations of history, and a variety of approaches to historical problems. Minor Study in Public History
The UNLV Public History Program integrates public history training and experience into a dynamic academic graduate program with an emphasis on cultural-western-environmental history.

Our program balances academic research with national caliber real-world experience in public history. Students at UNLV can build a study program based on their research interests and then take this interest to the field. The UNLV Public History program specializes in partnerships with interesting & dynamic agencies and organizations.

During the first five years of our program UNLV received over Two Million dollars in external funding for public history partnerships. Some notable projects include the five-year Nevada Test Site Oral History Project funded by the DOE. This multidisciplinary project has garnered national attention because of the subject and method. Other programs include Preserve Nevada (the only student-run statewide preservation organization in America), the Yosemite Seminar (an 8 year partnership with the National Park Service to create a new method for cultural resource research partnerships), The Autry National Center Fellowship (a year long $30,000 graduate fellowship in public history and museum studies), and the Walking Box Ranch Public Lands Initiative.

General Information
The Department of History at UNLV has offered an M.A. degree since 1968, and in 1991 inaugurated a Ph.D. program. Our graduates have gone on to careers in teaching, business, law, administration, professional writing, museum work and government service. Graduate degrees from UNLV have been especially helpful to those pursuing teaching careers in secondary schools and community colleges. The history faculty, which includes nationally and internationally recognized scholars, offers a wide range of topical and geographical courses. At the same time, the faculty is dedicated to providing each student with the individual attention necessary for a rewarding graduate experience.
