About the Web Site

The SheepGoatMarketing.info web site is a joint project between the University of Maryland and Cornell University. The original web site (sheepgoatmarketing.org) was created by the Northeast Sheep & Goat Marketing Program, a USDA grant-funded project to improve the marketing infrastructure for sheep and goat producers in the twelve northeastern states. While funding for the Northeast Sheep & Goat Marketing Program ended in early 2003, the University of Maryland was successful in obtaining a Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education (SARE) grant in 2004 to extend the accomplishments of the program.

One of the primary objectives of the SARE grant entitled, "The Mid-Atlantic Sheep & Goat Marketing Project" is to re-design and expand the web site to include other states and expanded information on marketing sheep and goat products. We are seeking to develop a national resource on sheep and goat marketing.

The ethnic/religious markets for sheep and goat meat will continue to be the major emphasis of the web site and the Mid-Atlantic Sheep & Goat Marketing Project. The Northeast will remain the geographic focus of the web site since this is where a higher percentage of lamb and goat is consumed in the United States. Producers and marketers from any state or province are invited to use the web site and make entries to the directories.
