The labor force participation rates of scientists and engineers with and without disabilities are quite different, and among those with disabilities, age at onset is related to labor force participation.

• Almost a third (31 percent) of scientists and engineers whose disability occurred at age 25 or older were out of the labor force, compared with 18 percent of those whose disability occurred before age 25 and 13 percent of those without disabilities.
• Almost 6 percent of scientists and engineers whose disability occurred before age 25 and 4 percent of those whose disability occurred at age 25 or older were unemployed, compared with 3 percent of those without disabilities.
