PATS conducts a comprehensive survey of Wisconsin farmers roughly every four years, in order to monitor farming and land use trends. We derive our sample from a list maintained by the Wisconsin Agricultural Statistics Service (WASS), a division of the USDA, housed at the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). We also analyze the results of the Census of Agriculture, which is released every five years.

PATS occasionally conducts special surveys or focus groups on issues of importance to Wisconsin farmers, such as federal policy or environmental management. These surveys and discussions, combined with our periodic surveys of dairy and non-dairy farms, help to provide a picture of the status of farming in Wisconsin.
