Abstract : BACKGROUND

Resource Managers from Federal and State fishery management agencies often request technical assistance in the areas of our recognized expertise such as physiology, behavior, ecology, genetics and fish passage. Requests can include such things as salmon smolt physiology assessments, guidance for construction of standard or unique fish ways such as eelways. They can also include requests to review technical documents, lead or assist in workshops that describe our capabilities, explore emerging issues in our areas of expertise, or participate on expert panels.

These requests are typically high priority regional issues but may have national implications and require rapid response by highly competent professionals who can coordinate and conduct the required research or implement the necessary technique(s). Often these requests can not be anticipated and are of such short duration that they do not justify the administrative cost of developing a stand-alone study plan. However, data derived from some of this assistance can lead to more substantive research projects or programs.

OBJECTIVES

Provide a variety of types of technical assistance (sample collections and analysis, technology installation or assessment, science review, workshop/conference planning and/or participation) to partner agencies as requested and when resources, time and capability are available. Requesting agencies typically are the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USFS, NOAA, State Fish and Wildlife agencies, Penobscot Indian Nation, and interagency groups and commissions such as the Connecticut River Atlantic Salmon Commission.
