Abstract : | This study was an outgrowth of the Southern Appalachian Assessment. A considerable amount of information was collected related to the human dimensions of ecosystems. The intention was to devise a framework and select parameters to portray the human dimensions of ecosystems from a holistic perspective. The resultant product provides the ecosystem managers with a strategy to measure various human dimensions so as to assist in the day-to-day decision making process. Thematic foci in the framework include sacred places, resource protection strategies, sense of place, anthropological context, social condition, social order, community fabric, human imprint, and economic dependency. Over 100 parameters were selected to portray these themes all defined as various dimensions of human capital. The parameters were described in temporal and spatial scales. |
