Frequently Asked Questions

The following are questions we are asked often. The answers provided below pertain primarily to the Fish Lake basin. If you would like to submit a question not found below to the Fishlake National Forest, you may do so by using our User Comment Form.

  1. Do I need a reservation to camp in the campgrounds?

  2. How do I make a campground reservation?

  3. Where are the hottest fishing spots?

  4. Where can I ride my ATV?

  5. What is the weather like during the summer?

Do I need a reservation to camp in the campgrounds?
A reservation is not required to camp in the campgrounds. Half of the sites are on a first-come first-served basis and the other half are reservable. Most people traveling long distances prefer making a reservation to assure them of a developed camp site. If all of the camp sites are filled, the overflow area at the south end of the lake will be open. Fees at the overflow area are half price because tables, fire pits, and water are not available.

How do I make a campground reservation?
All reservations are handled through the National Recreation Reservation Service. Reservations for Individual Family Sites can be made 240 days in advance; Group Sites 360 days in advance of arrival. When making your reservation, you will need to know the specific campground you prefer, type of site you want, dates you want to camp, vehicles/trailers/tents you are bringing, and your credit card number. Call toll-free (877) 444-6777; TDD (877) 833-6777. Reservations can also be made over the internet at ReserveUSA.com.

For more specific information on camping at Fish Lake, visit our "Camping in the Fish Lake Basin" section which indicates which sites are reservable, amount of fees charged, facilities, restrictions, etc

Where are the hottest fishing spots?
The most popular fishing areas are indicated on our Contour Map of Fish Lake. Success varies from day to day in different areas due to weather conditions and time of month. The best way to discover where the hottest fishing spots are for the day is to ask at the local marinas.

Where can I ride my ATV?
The Fish Lake Basin is designated as a developed recreation area for campgrounds, picnic grounds, trailheads, summer homes, and water-based support facilities. ATVs are not permitted in the Fish Lake Basin. Other areas in close proximity to the Fish Lake Basin which allow ATVs are Hancock Flat, Seven Mile, and Thousand Lake Mountain. Be sure to check the Fishlake National Forest Travel Map for regulations and restrictions on Forest Service lands. Our information center is located in the Fish Lake Lodge and is open only from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

What is the weather like during the summer?
During the summer months, temperatures range from a delightful 80 degrees in the day to 40 degrees during the night. Afternoon rain showers are common. Temperatures at this altitude are usually cooler than what you might normally expect and weather conditions can change rapidly at any time.
