Initiatives

Initiative FrameworkThe mission of the USGS Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) is to advance scientific knowledge and provide scientific information for restoring, enhancing, managing, and protecting the living resources and their habitats in the Great Lakes basin ecosystem. Management agencies, tribes, and other stakeholders need this scientific information to make decisions regarding fishery, aquatic, and coastal resources. One of the primary methods used to identify partner science needs is through GLSC Science Initiatives.

The purpose of the Science Initiatives is to create relevant new science to better address the needs of Great Lakes fishery, aquatic, and coastal resource managers. The framework for implementation of the Initiatives includes a template scientists can use to build partnerships, establish collaborations, build rigorous timely study design, and pursue research funding opportunities. Initially, a steering committee is formed consisting of resource managers, scientists, and other stakeholders from federal, state, provincial, and local agencies, tribes, and non-governmental organizations. A management driven, consensus-building, multidisciplinary approach is used to identify research themes and priorities, design a research strategy, devise funding strategies, and implement scientific studies on a focused research program or theme area.
