Soil and Health Library
Financial Statement

General Picture
Our website host and web design is by i-Possible, located in Melbourne, run by Matthew Tew. A flat fee contract was signed with Matthew in May, 2005, running 5 years, that includes a guarantee of virtually 100% uptime maintained by a dual server constant backup system. Matthew will also provide all needed site design for that fee. Matthew is talented, honest, caring and responsible. I recommend him to anyone needing site hosting and design.
I would always own an up-to-date computer if only for my other interests, so I do not consider hardware and software purchases as representing a cost to the library. The only computer-related expenses I have assigned to the library's overhead have been OCR software and a couple of extra zip drive cassettes to preserve archival records. One sizeable donation in 2001 went for purchase of a much faster scanner which is still in service. Recently I purchased a Xerox 286 Document Centre to the tune of a bit over $6,000, but have not expensed that to the library. It is used by this library as a high speed book scanner; I bought it out of my own pocked because I will be able to pay back the cost over the next four or five years by printing my own vegetable gardening book on it rather than going to the copy shop—a win/win.
To expand the library I buy used books, incur interlibrary loan fees and pay some international postage because many titles are loaned and I have to return them. Minor costs don't appear in this accounting: namely mileage, some telephone expense, miscellaneous postage, electricity to run computers, burning the midnight oil, etc. In June, 2005, the library was gifted with the health-related books of Ross Horne subject to paying shipping to bring them from Queensland. Ross' library will provide several years advance work sitting on the do-be-done shelf, an awesome responsibility.
Nothing is charged for my time and effort. Making this library is a huge joy.
Financial support from patrons is experienced as an appreciation of my efforts and allows me to expand the site's activities far beyond what I might do if I paid for everyhing out of pocket. Your contribution will be used only to forward the purposes of The Soil and Health Library. The Soil and Health Library is NOT yet a registered or chartered nonprofit. It currently has neither constitution, bylaws, written structure nor bank account. So any donations must be directed to Steve Solomon, personally. Although I request only ten euros from users as a once-in-a-lifetime contribution, larger donations are joyfully accepted.
One remaining task I have regarding this library is to create a proper committee, bylaws, and all that stuff, so that there will be a chance for the library to go on past the time that I can forward this work.

Frequency of update
Just about every time new files are put to the site this page will be updated.

Currency of account
Costs and donations often are indiscriminately expressed in any of these—US, Canadian, NZ or Australian dollars—without concern for the exchange rate. This inaccuracy allows for simplicity. Besides, it seems irrelevant what the exact balance is, as long as the figures below tell the story of the site and roughly portray its financial position.

1 April, 2006

Today is an astounding day! The site has gone into the black for the first time since inception. And last month has been an astounding month for another reason: the Soil and Health Library has expanded from being only a virtual library offering only e-books (and thus skating dangerously on the bleeding edge of copyright law) to becoming a "real" library in a much more secure and defensibly legal position regarding supplying copies of out of print books to patrons. The current book collection is being catalogued and the holdings will be posted on the site, probably before the end of April, 2006. And henceforth almost all funds in excess of hosting costs will be spend on book acquisitions and developing the real library. I will donate the space to properly house the library. It will have regular (but extremely limited) hours when it will be open to the public, a reading room, and who knows what else will become of it. I intend that it will become a meaningful planetary archival resource, housed in about as safe a place as exists on this planet. And now that there is something solid about it there is a far better chance now that it will become an enduring institution. Stay tuned! And thanks to all contributing members for their support.

1 January, 2007
The library is accumulating a surplus right now, to pay for shelving in the room that soon will house it.
The slab for my new house has been poured and is curing; framing will begin on 22 January, 2007. Construction should achieve "lock-up" stage in less than two months. The library will be part of this new house, occupying a 4 metre by 4 metre room. The only building costs that will be paid from membership contributions will be for bookshelves. The library will be open to contributing members during limited but regular hours (except by special arrangement).

Insulated waffle slab: four inches (100 cm) concrete
with eight or nine inches of foam and dead air spaces below it.
The slab in the foreground will be the garage, 7 x 7 metres.

Bits of styrofoam showing the dead air cells
and styrofoam under the slab.

1 February, 2007

Update: The framing is going apace. Walls are about up and on Monday week the roof trusses are scheduled to arrive. That means there will be a roof over the place a few days later. Excellent. No more pix as there is nothing that a photograph can properly depict and won't be until there are some solid walls so that spaces can be shown in a photo.

The library has funds right now to pay for the cost of shelving and then some; so it seems time to resume searching for print-on-paper books to purchase to place on that soon-to-come shelving.

My biggest worry about the place all along has been this: how will I possibly find enough garden land on such a small block! I mean the block is only 900+ square metres. It is a "back block," something in North America I've heard termed a "flag lot." It is located behind the houses on the street and has a long narrow lane leading to it. That lane is 4.3 metres wide by about 25 metres long, so that amount of land can be deducted from the 900 sq. metres. Then remove the land the house and garage (workshop) occupy and the land these structures inevitably shade so much as to make impossible to consider these (SE facing) areas as potential food production land. What is left might amount to 350 square metres.

You see, my intention is to find out how large a portion of everything I will eat in a year can be produced on this block. And also how close to a closed system of food production can I create there. Likely a book will be forthcoming a few years from now.

1 April, 2007

The building is going forward rapidly although not as fast as originally hoped for. The exterior is nearly complete; the rendering (stucco) should be finished this week and then only three exterior doors need to be hung to take it to "lock up." Inside, plasterboard is up on all walls and is being mudded and taped; stairs are in; the painter comes later this week and then the fitting out (finish carpentry) begins. The completion date targeted, mid-May, is still quite likely. The room allocated for the Soil and Health Library is about 3.5 metres by 3.5 metres, with a double glass door, turning the entire room into a sort of glass-front bookcase. The walls and ceiling of the library are insulated to keep the temperature inside lower than the rest of the house, and as stable as it is inexpensively possible to achieve. The shelving question has been about settled. It seems that quite fine shelves can be build for under $2,000, allowing the storage of maybe 3,000 titles, perhaps enough for quite some years of increasing the collection, so it is time now to begin spending the surplus funds accumulated over the past few months on book acquisitions. Click this link to see what the acutal collection contains right now.

I expect that the library will be open for use by contributing members before the middle of June, this year.

23 April, 2007

Here are some pictures of the house, taken a few days earlier:

The house faces north, with lots of glass on the sun side; it is "passive solar."

Approximately 50,000 litres of rainwater storage (11,000 gallons) should run the house without needing to use mains water. Maybe these tanks will entirely support the food gardens, too.

25 May, 2007

Sheving for the new library has been purchased and assembled. Instead of something substantial and expensive, five flat-pack cheap office-grade shelving units were chosen, each 900 x 1800 x 300. There is space for three more such in the room and when the room is filled with shelves it will be capable of holding approximately 2,000 volumes, which is probably more titles than the subject areas of this library will ever require.

Henceforth, almost all funds received will be spent on acqisition of books. Click this link to see what the actual collection contains right now.

15 June, 2007

I declare that the library and reading room is now open to access by contributing members. If you plan to be in Tasmania, ring Steve Solomon at 03 6330 1113 and set up a mutually convenient time for a visit. Tea (or coffee) will be served.

2 December, 2007

Apologies are in order. So much has been happening in my life these last four months that I have not had time to spend the income generated by membership contributions (much less finding time to devote to processing more materials into e-texts). Thus the credit balance of this library has grown to an embarrassing amount. However, my life is settling now and I expect that I will be able to spend a few thousand dollars each month acquiring books, maybe even doing some OCR. The main thrust of acquisitions at this point will be to complete the ag library collection.

15 March, 2008

Apologies are in order. So much has continued to be happening in my life that I have not been able to spend the contributions except for purchasing a few books and a copy of ABBYY FineReader 9.0. Using 9.0 is showing me a new possibility: putting books online that have not been converted to searchable e-texts, but are merely rasterized images. This becomes possible because a small book (under 250 pages) becomes a document of under 10 mb, a download size that is possible these days for most internet users. What this means to me is that I can process (scan, adjust, upload) a book in one hour instead of six to ten hours. So more books will start appearing more rapidly.
