CONSIDERING CNG CONVERSION?
Some do-it-yourself kits don’t meet EPA requirements, can be dangerous
Weber-Morgan health officials urge drivers, who are thinking of converting their automobiles or trucks to operate on a compressed-natural-gas combustion system, to look for certified technicians to install them.
“We are aware of non-certified systems being sold at shops in the area and on the internet,” says Brian Cowan, air quality program manager for the Weber-Morgan Health Department. “People need to be aware that installing one of these non-certified systems is considered tampering with the emissions system and is against federal and state law.”
Weber-Morgan Health officials are not aware of any certified installation outlets in the Ogden area and few in the state of Utah. The EPA-certified kits come with a certificate and a decal installed by the technician. Local emissions technicians will need to see both the decal and the certificate at the time of inspection.
