Metal Detecting

Guidelines for the use of metal detectors on TVA lands

Metal detecting as a recreational activity is allowed on certain TVA fee-owned lands. Metal detectors may not be used on any prehistoric or historic archaeological site or at any human burial location. These sites and their contents are protected by both state and federal laws. (Read about archaeological sites on TVA lands on our Cultural Resources page.)

Metal detectors may be used on TVA property in the following locations:

  • Within formal swimming areas
  • Within the designated boundaries of TVA campgrounds (campsite must be unoccupied)
  • Immediately adjacent to public launching ramps (within 100 feet)
  • Parking areas associated with any of the above.

Anyone wishing to use a metal detector must complete the Application for Metal Detecting Permit (PDF, 107 kb, requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) and receive a permit before the detector can be used on TVA lands. The application form includes a summary of guidelines and procedures and the address for mailing the application.
